What Is GEO for Employer Brand?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) for employer brand is the practice of improving how a company appears in AI-generated responses to candidate-intent queries. Unlike traditional SEO, which optimizes for page rankings on search engines, GEO for employer brand optimizes for inclusion, accuracy, and favorable positioning in the synthesized answers that AI models generate when candidates ask where to work. The following terms define the vocabulary of this emerging discipline.
AI Employer Visibility
The degree to which a company appears, is described accurately, and is positioned favorably in AI-generated responses to candidate-intent queries. AI employer visibility is the overarching metric for how well a company shows up in AI when candidates are deciding where to work. It encompasses mention rate, narrative positioning, citation coverage, and competitive dynamics across all stages of the candidate decision journey. A company with strong AI employer visibility is named frequently, described accurately, and positioned favorably relative to competitors. A company with weak AI employer visibility is either absent from AI responses or described in ways that do not reflect its actual strengths.
Candidate Decision Journey
The four-stage framework that models how candidates evaluate employers through AI: Discovery, Consideration, Evaluation, and Commitment. Each stage involves different query types, different information needs, and different competitive dynamics. The candidate decision journey provides a structured way to diagnose where AI employer visibility breaks down and what the pipeline impact is at each stage. It replaces the generic "hiring funnel" concept with a model specific to how AI mediates candidate decisions.
Discovery Visibility
The ability of a company to appear in AI-generated responses to broad, exploratory candidate queries -- queries where the candidate has not named the company specifically. Examples include "best companies for data scientists" or "top employers in healthcare IT." Discovery visibility is the most valuable and hardest-to-achieve form of AI employer visibility, because it determines whether candidates who have never heard of a company learn about it through AI. A company that is invisible at the Discovery stage loses 100% of AI-researching candidates who do not already know its name.
Earned Visibility
When AI names a company without the candidate asking about it specifically. Earned visibility occurs at the Discovery stage of the candidate decision journey. It means the AI model considers the company relevant enough to include in a response to a broad query like "best fintech companies for engineers." Earned visibility is the opposite of prompted visibility and is a stronger signal of AI employer visibility strength, because it reflects the company's presence across the citation ecosystem rather than the candidate's prior awareness.
Prompted Visibility
When AI responds to a query that names the company specifically. Prompted visibility occurs at the Consideration, Evaluation, and Commitment stages. For example, a candidate asks "what is it like to work at [Company]?" and AI generates a response. Prompted visibility is easier to achieve than earned visibility -- AI will attempt to answer any specific query -- but the quality, accuracy, and favorability of the response varies based on the company's citation ecosystem presence. Having prompted visibility does not mean having earned visibility. Most companies overestimate their AI employer visibility because they test only prompted queries.
Citation Ecosystem
The set of platforms, publications, and data sources that AI models draw from when synthesizing employer-related answers. The citation ecosystem for employer queries typically includes review platforms (Glassdoor, Comparably, Blind), salary databases (Levels.fyi, Payscale), company profile platforms (Built In, LinkedIn, Crunchbase), technical content (engineering blogs, GitHub, conference talks), press and media, and community platforms (Reddit, Blind, Hacker News). Understanding the citation ecosystem is critical because AI does not generate employer information from internal knowledge alone -- it synthesizes from these specific sources. A company's presence or absence on these platforms directly determines how AI describes it.
Citation Gap
A platform or source that AI cites when describing competitors but where the assessed company has no meaningful presence. Citation gaps are the highest-priority remediation targets in an AI employer visibility assessment. For example, if AI consistently cites Levels.fyi salary data when describing competitors' compensation but the assessed company has no Levels.fyi profile, that is a citation gap. Closing citation gaps is typically the fastest path to improving AI employer visibility because it addresses the specific sources AI is already using.
Visibility Displacement
When a competitor appears in an AI response where the assessed company does not -- measured per decision stage and per query theme. Visibility displacement is more specific than "being outranked" because it identifies exactly where and how a competitor is taking share of AI attention. For example, a company might have zero displacement at the Consideration stage (AI describes it well when asked directly) but high displacement at the Discovery stage (competitors are named in broad queries where this company is absent). Displacement analysis reveals competitive dynamics that are invisible in traditional employer brand metrics.
AI Mention Rate
The percentage of candidate-intent AI queries in which a company is named. AI mention rate is the top-line metric of AI employer visibility. If a company is mentioned in 42 out of 120 candidate-intent queries, its mention rate is 35%. Mention rate should be analyzed at the aggregate level and per decision stage -- a company with a 50% overall mention rate but a 10% Discovery mention rate has a fundamentally different problem than a company with a 30% overall rate distributed evenly across stages. Mention rate is comparable across competitors, making it useful for benchmarking.
Pipeline Throughput Leakage
The compounded loss of candidates across decision stages due to AI visibility gaps. Pipeline throughput leakage quantifies the aggregate impact of visibility problems across the candidate decision journey. For example, if a company is invisible in 60% of Discovery queries, loses 30% of candidates at Consideration due to a weak AI narrative, and loses 50% at Evaluation due to unfavorable competitor comparisons, only 14% of AI-researching candidates survive to the Commitment stage. The remaining 86% are lost at various stages -- and none of them appear in ATS data, recruiter pipelines, or sourcing reports. Narrative Positioning
How AI frames a company at each stage of the candidate decision journey. Narrative positioning is categorized into tiers: Champion (named as a top example with specific favorable detail), Contender (named alongside competitors with a balanced description), Peripheral (mentioned briefly without endorsement or detail), Cautionary (named with negative framing or significant caveats), and Invisible (not mentioned). A company's narrative positioning tier at each stage determines not just whether candidates see it, but how they perceive it. A company with Champion positioning at Consideration but Invisible positioning at Discovery has a reach problem. A company with Cautionary positioning at Evaluation has a perception problem. The distinction drives different remediation strategies.
Visibility Boundary
The threshold at which a company transitions from invisible to visible in AI responses for a given query theme or decision stage. Visibility boundaries are not fixed -- they depend on the competitive landscape, the citation ecosystem, and the specificity of the query. Understanding where a company sits relative to its visibility boundary helps prioritize remediation: a company that is just below the boundary for Discovery queries in its industry may need only incremental citation ecosystem improvements to cross it, while a company far below the boundary requires more fundamental presence-building.
Sourced vs. Unsourced Findings
The distinction between AI-generated statements about a company that cite or clearly draw from identifiable sources and statements that appear to be synthesized or inferred without a traceable origin. Sourced findings can be verified and addressed: if AI cites a negative Glassdoor review, the company can respond on Glassdoor. Unsourced findings are harder to address because the origin is unclear -- AI may be synthesizing a general sentiment from multiple weak signals. In a rigorous AI employer visibility assessment, every finding is classified as sourced or unsourced, and confidence scores are adjusted accordingly. Assessments that do not make this distinction risk treating AI-generated inferences as factual findings.
Employer Signal Surface
The aggregate of all digital signals -- reviews, profiles, content, citations, press, community discussion -- that AI models synthesize when answering candidate queries about an employer. The employer signal surface replaces the generic concept of "digital footprint" with something specific to AI synthesis. A company's employer signal surface determines the raw material AI has to work with. A thin employer signal surface (limited to Glassdoor and a careers page) produces thin, generic AI responses. A rich employer signal surface (spanning review sites, salary databases, engineering blogs, press, and community platforms) gives AI the material to construct a detailed, accurate, and distinctive narrative.
Answer-Surface Intelligence
The practice of analyzing and optimizing for AI answer surfaces -- the synthesized responses AI models generate -- rather than traditional search result pages. Answer-surface intelligence is what distinguishes GEO for employer brand from traditional employer SEO. Search engines present ranked links. AI models present synthesized answers. The analysis methodology, the signals that matter, and the optimization strategies are fundamentally different. Answer-surface intelligence treats each AI-generated response as a data point to be captured, scored, and analyzed for mention patterns, citation sources, narrative framing, and competitive dynamics.
